How we score surf
Excellent — 0.7–2.5 m, period 9 s or longer and light or offshore wind.
Good — 0.7–2.5 m surf.
Fair — Small (0.4–0.7 m) or very big surf.
Poor — Flat or blown out by strong onshore wind.
Before you go
- Longer swell period = more powerful, better organised waves.
- Light offshore wind cleans the faces; strong onshore makes it messy.
- Many breaks work best at mid tide — watch the tide on the spot forecast.
- Check for rips before paddling out, and respect the line-up.

Wave height on Spotwind is the significant height of all waves (swell plus wind waves). The swell period tells you how much energy is in them.
