How we score boating

GO — Seas under 2 ft (0.6 m) and wind under 14 mph.
OK — Some chop: up to about 3 ft or 17 mph — fine for most boats, slower going.
CARE — Rough for small boats: stay inside bays and close to harbour.
NO — Thunderstorms, seas over 6.5 ft (2 m) or gusts over 35 mph.

Before you go

  • File a float plan: tell someone where you go and when you are back.
  • Cross inlets on the incoming tide — outgoing tide against an onshore wind stacks steep waves.
  • Afternoon storms build fast near the coast: watch the sky to the west.
  • Carry life jackets for everyone, a VHF radio, flares and enough fuel for the way back plus a third.
  • Always check the official marine forecast and local notices before leaving.

Good to know

Wind is the first thing to check: above about 15 mph the sea builds quickly, and gusts make docking and anchoring harder. The direction matters too — an onshore wind pushes waves into inlets and harbour mouths.

Waves are shown as the significant wave height: the average of the highest third. Single waves can be almost twice as high, especially when the swell period is long.

The sea marks layer comes from OpenSeaMap: buoys, beacons, lights, harbours and anchorages drawn on top of the map. It is a great planning aid, but never a replacement for official nautical charts.
