How we score diving & snorkel

Excellent — Waves under 0.5 m and light wind: flat surface, best visibility.
Good — Waves under 0.9 m: easy entries, some surface chop.
Fair — Waves up to 1.4 m: boat dives OK, shore entries harder, lower visibility.
Poor — Rough sea or storms: stay out.

Before you go

  • Plan shore dives around slack tide (near high or low tide) for the weakest currents.
  • After heavy rain, visibility near river mouths and beaches drops for a day or two.
  • Never dive alone, and use a surface marker buoy where boats pass.
  • Check your suit against the water temperature: below 22 °C (72 °F) most divers want at least 5 mm.
  • Don't fly within 18–24 hours after diving.

Good to know

Visibility depends mostly on how calm the sea has been — not only today but the last two or three days. A long swell from far away can stir the bottom even when the surface looks flat.

The depth map shows the shape of the sea floor. Reefs and drop-offs close to shore are often the best snorkelling spots on calm days.

Dive centres, wrecks and reefs come from OpenStreetMap. Zoom in on any coast and tap "Show in this area" to load them.
